Linda Lukens' dog training background
Linda is a Certified Graduate of Dog Training School
  • Linda started her dog training career in 1973. A graduate of Captain Haggerty's intensive Dog Trainer School, she graduated top in her class. She then began working alongside Matthew Margolis, a well know author and TV personality known as "Uncle Matty".  She did private lessons in the NY metropolitan area and obedience classes.

  • In 1974, she started her own dog training business, serving Manhattan, all of the boroughs, NJ, and L.I.

  • In addition to dog training, Linda volunteered to work at the Bronx Zoo. Upon completion  of their extensive training course, she became a "Friend of the Zoo". She conducted tours and educational talks for school groups and other visitors. She joined their "Outreach Program", taking animals to schools, nursing homes, hospitals, and other institutions, giving live animal demonstrations and lectures. Because of her dog training background, she was invited to be part of the Zoo's taming and socialization program. She readied previously unhandled animals for the Outreach Program. She trained a wide variety of animals, among them Armadillos, Owls, Hawks, Ferrets, Parrots, Lizards and Snakes, and one very personable Rooster.

  • In 1978, Linda decided to expand her knowledge base by working in Animal Hospitals. She started training and working as a Veterinary Assistant. She has worked for many local Westchester Veterinarians.

  • In 1988, Linda worked part-time for WARC. She taught dance movement therapy to developmentally disabled individuals using a behavioral approach.

  • While continuing her dog training business, in 1993, Linda worked at Green Chimney's Children's Services in Brewster, NY. She taught at-risk, emotionally disturbed, and learning disabled children to relate to and train the residential therapeutic dogs.

  • In 1993, she attended Cornell University's Dog Behavior Course with Dr. Katherine Haupt, a leading canine behaviorist.

  • In 1994, she attended Karen Pryor's Clicker Training for dog trainers course, increasing her knowledge in positive training techniques.
  •  
  • Also in 1994, Linda appeared with her dog Bellamy on two local Cable TV shows, where she shared her philosophy,  techniques, and answered viewers' questions.

  • Linda has had a long association with Adopt-a-Dog in Greenwich, CT, where she has advised and trained owners of rescued dogs. She enjoys being a judge in their fun "Puttin' on the Dog" show each September

  •  Linda's love of both people and animals, as well as her  extensive knowledge of behavioral techniques, has led to work with service dogs. She has experience  working with dogs trained to assist children with developmental disabilities, and adults with psychiatric disabilities. She is very pleased to add these new skills to her repertoire, and to offer her services in these areas.
